Mealtime with Seniors

As we age, we may experience difficulty swallowing, chewing and biting our food. This makes getting proper nutrition a challenge, but it is not impossible! There are a variety of ways we can adjust our meals to make them easier and more effective when these physical challenges exist.

According to Dieticians Canada, symptoms of swallowing problems are coughing and choking when you eat or drink. This may require a visit to your doctor to discuss options. If you have problems with your teeth, gums or dentures, a visit to your dentist is in order.

If you find it difficult to swallow your food, you may want to choose foods that are softer to eat or change the way you prepare your food.

Helpful Tips

  • Choose thicker liquids or purchase a thickener and add it to liquids to make it easier to swallow.

  • Chop, mash or puree foods. This can be achieved using a fork, blender, or food processor

  • Add gravy or sauce to help moisten and soften your food

  • Drink nutritious smoothies packed with veggies and fruits to supplement your meals.

Soft Food Options

Grain - soft, fresh bread, mashed or boiled potatoes, rice, or oatmeal

Vegetables & Fruits - Well-cooked vegetables to soften, canned fruit in natural juices, 100% fruit or vegetable juice, apple sauce and pureed fruits are also great options.

Other options include smooth creamy soups and puddings. You may also opt for custards and yogurt.
