Happy Earth Day! It was first introduced in 1970 when millions of Americans protested for better environmental protections. The day was not made popular worldwide until 20 years later when people worldwide united and began organizing and fighting for climate protection across 141 countries.
Wondering what you and your family can do to help the Earth on this special day? What about the seniors you care for in retirement homes and other home care communities?
Well, you can start with some simple tasks like the activity booklet we included here or "dig" a little deeper and try out these gardening activities and other actions to help this Earth Day!
5 Earth Day Activities for Seniors & Caregivers
Depending on each individual's needs and mobility concerns, choose one or more of the following activities to do on your own, as a family, or as a home-care community!
Plant a Tree or Grow your own Vegetables
Consider planting a tree if there is an area within your facility's or home's yard space! Some options may be at your local tree nursery, such as pine tree seedlings. Another idea may be to plant flower or vegetable seeds in a small clay pot for each family member or resident in care! Paint or decorate the pot, add some soil and seeds, and tend to your own mini garden!
Reusable Water Bottles & Bags
Many of us may already be reducing the world's plastics by replacing plastic water bottles with metal-based reusable bottles or choosing paper or fabric reusable bags for our groceries. These options are a great way to help protect the world's oceans and waterways from harmful plastics that can endanger species and the water supply.
Birds in the Backyard
Want to view the beauty of birds and hear their songs in your backyard? Why not build, decorate, or purchase a bird feeder or birdhouse? It's a great option to bring nature closer while helping birds out with food and shelter during the warmer months!
Walking with Purpose
Enjoy nature's bounty by taking a stroll through your neighbourhood or community park. Bring a pair of binoculars for bird watching or even a few garbage bags to pick up litter along the way! It's a great way to get active, socialize with family and friends, and help the Earth at the same time!
Indoor activities
Spring weather can be a challenge, and so can mobility concerns for many seniors. That's why opting for indoor activities, such as planting flowers in small pots, designing a kite to fly later on, or colouring fun pictures for Earth Day, like the ones below, can be just as helpful for socializing, maintaining emotional and physical well-being, and feeling part of the global community of helpers!
