Springtime Critters Activity for Seniors

cute animal crafts

Spring is finally here! Warmer weather, longer daylight hours, blooming flowers and trees, and, of course, the appearance of those adorable (and often pesky) critters - butterflies, bees, and bunnies!

For today's senior activity, we thought it would be fun to create our own cute critters using household items, some crafting supplies and your own creativity!

Benefits of Activities for Seniors

Engaging in arts and crafts activities can bring numerous benefits to seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's. Here are some of the advantages:

  1. Cognitive Stimulation: Participating in arts and crafts helps to stimulate the brain and enhance cognitive functioning. It can improve memory, problem-solving skills, and concentration, thereby slowing down the progression of dementia.

  2. Emotional Expression: Artistic activities provide an outlet for seniors to express themselves creatively. This can help alleviate feelings of frustration, anxiety, and agitation commonly associated with dementia or Alzheimer's.

  3. Sense of Accomplishment: Completing a craft project gives seniors a sense of accomplishment and boosts their self-esteem. This can improve their overall mood and enhance their sense of purpose.

  4. Social Interaction: Arts and crafts activities often encourage socialization, allowing seniors to connect with others and build relationships. This social engagement can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

  5. Sensory Stimulation: Crafting activities involve using different textures, colours, and materials, which can provide sensory stimulation for seniors. This sensory engagement can be calming, engaging, and enjoyable for individuals with dementia.

  6. Motor Skills Improvement: Arts and crafts require fine motor skills, such as gripping, cutting, and gluing. These activities help seniors maintain and improve their dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

  7. Memory Recall: Art projects can trigger memories and evoke a sense of nostalgia. This can facilitate reminiscence therapy, allowing seniors to recall past experiences and share stories, which can improve their overall cognitive functioning.

  8. Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Crafting activities can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels. The repetitive motions and focus required during these activities can calm seniors, helping them feel more at ease and content.

By incorporating arts and crafts into the daily lives of seniors with dementia or Alzheimer's, caregivers and activity coordinators can provide a meaningful and enjoyable experience that stimulates their cognitive abilities, fosters emotional well-being, and promotes social interaction.

Springtime Critters

Here's what you need:
  • 1 (or more) toilet paper roll - or cardboard roll from paper towels, cut in half

  • Craft paint, your choice of colours depending on the critter you choose

  • Markers or pencil crayons

  • Craft paper, your choice of colours depending on critter choice

  • Accessories, such as googly eyes, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, stickers, etc.

  • Craft glue

Here's what to do:
  1. Begin by deciding what animal or insect you would like to create!

  2. Choose colours of craft paper, paint or markers, and accessories needed. Set aside.

  3. Using the cardboard roll, either paint or cover it with craft paper (secure with glue or tape). Let dry fully if using paint.

  4. While drying, cut the shapes needed for your design, such as triangles for beaks, circles for faces, or thin rectangles for antennae or whiskers! You can also use our basic template for a butterfly or bee design!

  5. You may also decide what accessories can be used, such as pipe cleaners for whiskers or antennae or pom-poms for noses!

  6. Once you have made and cut out your choices, assemble your critter by gluing each piece on the cardboard roll! Make sure everything is fully dry before displaying.
